The Concept

M+ is a world-class facility to house Hong Kong's future museum of visual culture. It is situated on the waterfront of the Victoria Harbour at the edge of West Kowloon Cultural District. One stop unique design solution is provided for this custom-made building envelope integrated with ceramic tile panels, precast concrete panels, glass panels and LED media façade video display lighting system.
In order to fulfil the architectural intent and technical requirements, a unitized curtain wall system is designed to guarantee weather tightness behind the pre-cast concrete features. The terracotta plates and open sections are installed to the pre-cast concrete elements at the pre-cast supplier’s facility. The curtain wall is produced at façade factory including glazing, then transported to the pre-cast concrete facility for final assembly of the integrated curtain wall, pre-cast concrete, and ceramic tile panel as well as LED. The finished panels are an average weight of 6 t for the tower and 9 t for the podium.
The unitized façade and cladding design approach guarantees a minimum of installation works at site combined with the superior qualities of a unitized curtain wall with regard to weather tightness and longevity within the design life requirements of the building.

The Project
Scope of Work

21,100 sqm (227,100 sq ft) of precast concrete ceramic unitized curtain wall, divided into 1,590 units for the tower and 752 units for the podium. 740 units of vertical precast concrete ceramic mullion; 8,000 sqm (86,100 sq ft) of podium glazed wall, window, feature, skylight and louvre.

10,000 sqm (107,600 sq ft) of glass wall for the WKCDA Tower.

Design, supply and installation of LED media façade video display lighting system.

Its design is a combination of a horizontal and vertical structure that, when viewed from the side, resembles the sign for typhoon signal 3. The horizontal structure holds a wide variety of spaces ranging from an underground area moulded around the Airport Express MTR line and capable of housing enormous installation, to individual galleries for different types of art.
A large public space is created by elevating the building from the ground. The south-facing vertical structure has a flat surface on which big artworks can be projected - and be visible from across the Victoria Harbour. Integrated into the sun-shading horizontal louvers of the façade, an LED lighting system activates the building as a coarse-grained, oversized display screen for works of art selected by curators or created especially for M+.

The design using glazed finish ceramic tiles got its inspiration from the traditional Chinese architectures’ glazed roof tiles, which linkages with the local culture also the material itself is hard wearing.  Ceramic Tiles were made in Palagio Engineering Srl, Chianti, Florence, Italy.
