Interactive Corp. was the first Frank Gehry design ever completed in New York City and the first constructed entirely of glass. Barry Diller's corporate headquarters for the InterActiveCorp media company was built to resemble a tall ship in full sail.
Standing 10 stories high, the building sits opposite the Chelsea Piers sports complex in lower Manhattan. The building has 1,450 curtain wall units custom engineered, of which 1,349 are unique in their shape and degree of twist.
The façade incorporates double glazed, 12'x5' glass panels. The unitized panels were shipped to the construction site flat and then 'cold-warped' or bent into shape on site. Indeed, the cold-bent glass was never attempted in the U.S. before, and never done to the same degree anywhere. Curvature calculation for each panel was a collaborative effort by all parties. With a skin of white-fritted glass, the cladding acts as an integrated sunscreen and enhances the building's sustainability.
Design & engineering, manufacture and installation of 8,800 sqm (95,000 sq ft) of double glazed, curved glass curtain wall.
